PTA had already helped Sensormatic in a successful product launch when it
was approached to be part of the team for developing the more advanced
Handscan. Sensormatic needed a partner it could depend on for engineering
and delivery. PTA had clearly proven it could handle tight deadlines, and possessed
excellent design and tooling support.
Sensormatic Electronics Corporation is the leading supplier of electronic security
solutions. The Handscan was developed for retailers and is capable of performing
multiple functions including deactivating imbedded sensor tags, scanning
bar codes, and "real-time" wireless communications. The unit is battery
operated, highly mobile, easy to handle, and extremely durable.
- Sensormatic collaborated with PTA to design, engineer and produce the Handscan
to meet the rigorous demands of several criteria. PTA reviewed
the designs for quality, cost, and performance improvements
related to tooling and molding.
- The project consisted of 17 molded parts for the charger
stand and cradle, and the handheld data logger. PTA was
able to handle numerous molds simultaneously by dividing
tooling between its facilities in Colorado and Connecticut, and
dedicating 2 project managers and 4 mold designers to the
program.( view 2 )
- Using state-of-the-art CNC equipment, parting lines were
sculpted for a seamless finish.( view 3 )
- The overmolded elastomer on the top and bottom covers
was applied with precision accuracy using a "shut-off" strategy.
PTA added further value by heat staking the lenses.( view 4 )
- The initial pre-production run was accomplished within 10
weeks. Because strength was built into the device through a
combination of design and materials, the product greatly
exceeded the quality control drop tests.
