PTA's participation with Siemens began early in the development
of the product with design, material selection and metal conversion
discussions.
Siemens is a leading worldwide manufacturer and service provider
of diagnostic medical ultrasound systems that generate, display,
archive and retrieve ultrasound images. The Aspen™ and Sequoia™ Systems
combine superior image resolution with enhancements for improved performance.
The units feature compact systems with multi wheel swivel control, height adjustable
keyboards, and tilt-and-swivel monitors.
- Plastics allowed Siemens to package electronic,
mechanical, optical, and consumable functions within
advanced ergonomic designs at an acceptable price point.
- PTA recommended that aluminum
molds be used for tooling — the most cost-effective method
for limited volume runs of several large sections, such as panels
and fascia.
- To achieve the rigidity required over large areas, PTA
suggested that many of the plastic parts be manufactured
from the structural foams Lexan and Noryl. ( view

- Final assembly included painting the
parts to match the color and texture of nearby sheet metal and
injection-molded components. In addition, PTA shipped complete kits
ensuring cost-effective manufacturing at Siemens.
